About The Station House Haslemere
When looking around for once loved pubs and inns we immediately fell head over heels for this impressive Victorian building and former railway pub. Following a £3m renovation the renamed Station House opened its doors on the 22nd November 2016.
This is a brief history of this fine inn. There are lots of gaps and we’d appreciate any help in providing information, photographs, film footage or anything else that may be of interest. Email us at email@example.com.
In 1853 a Bill of Parliament was passed for the building of a new railway line to connect London to Portsmouth. For £350,000 a contractor agreed to build the line from Godalming to Havant.
In 1858 the Portsmouth Direct Line opened and with it a station in the quaint and charming market town of Haslemere. Shortly afterwards The Railway Hotel opened opposite Haslemere Station to cater for the influx of railway passengers.
We know from ‘Around Haslemere and Hindhead’ that The Railway Hotel was owned in 1890s by George Edward Berry, who was then followed by Thomas and Helen Castleman. In 1909 he promoted a “railway, commercial and family hotel with spacious coffee and refreshment rooms”, something we’re looking to build again.
In the early 1900s the name was changed to the Haslemere Hotel and then at some point after it became the Inn on the Hill.
After a succession of owners and managers the inn closed and fell into disrepair before being bought by the Upham Pub Company in January 2016.
