Portsmouth Distillery Co. release England’s first aged rum, produced throughout the pandemic
The Portsmouth Distillery Co. marks a significant post-covid milestone to become the first English producer to release an aged rum. Called 1812 and made from scratch before anyone had heard of Covid-19, the rum was laid down in the Fort Cumberland casemates where it remained under its own lockdown for 3 years. It will be released in a history making event on May 20, 2022 and we extend an invitation for you to join us.
Head Distiller and director Vince Noyce says “It’s hard to avoid the significance of our first aged rum release coming at this time, when the nation is freeing itself of the last elements of Covid restrictions. Our 1812 was created before the first lockdown and the process of aging has continued unabated during the toughest times in 2020 and 2021.”
Like many distilleries, the team at Portsmouth Distillery produced hand sanitiser during lockdown, giving much of it away to local customers and the region’s hospitality industry to help where they could.
They also continued rum production. Since March 2019 they have been carefully distilling Sugar Cane Syrup rum to lay down for ageing in the casemates of Fort Cumberland, less than 100m from the sea.
With the launch of this rum this month, The Portsmouth Distillery Co. makes history as the first distillery in England to make from scratch and age rum for 3 years. It will be bottled as a single distillery, cask release bottling, meaning each bottling will potentially have its own unique characteristics, behind which are intense notes of caramel and citrus peel alongside tropical fruits and layers of toffee and pear drops. Bottled at 43% abv, 1812 is incredibly soft and smooth with a burst of overripe bananas, finishing with just the right amount of bite from the alcohol.
