EURO 2024
The football league season is now over and focus is firmly on a huge tournament this summer, the men’s Euro 2024 in Germany. For pubs across England and Wales, it means a potential boost to trade. While Scotland face a battle to reach the knockout stages, England are the pre-tournament favourites and therefore are seemingly ‘guaranteed’ a semi-final berth.

But what does that mean for pub or bar owners and managers?
Well, the government has already said it will automatically provide licensed premises with an extension of hours for semi-finals and final in July across England and Wales.
The Home Office proposal will see a blanket relaxation of licensing hours if any of the qualifying home nations (Scotland and England) reach the semi-final or final of the men’s 2024 European Championships.
Licensing hours for these games are proposed to be extended to 1am in England and Wales, which will be particularly important for any games on a Sunday, including the final. On Sundays, many venues are only licensed until 10.30pm.
Changes in Scotland will be decided locally by the Scottish Parliament.
The importance of this cannot be underestimated, simply due to the fervour in which football fans or even patriotic fans, will try and consume the games.
It gives licensed premises a unique opportunity to ensure they can increase revenues, and it’s vital they are supported to do this given the strains on finances thanks to increased energy costs and the cost-of-living crisis.
