The Burnt Chef Project

About the Company

Launched in May 2019 The Burnt Chef Project was setup with the sole intention of eradicating mental health stigma within hospitality

"I've been working closely within the hospitality industry for around 9 years and have seen first hand the struggles of mental health issues within the trade with both clients and friends.

Margins are slim and with increased focus on saving money both employers and employees feel the effect of this on their mental health.

Long antisocial hours, tough environmental conditions and pressures to perform are just some of the issues that hospitality professionals are fighting against on a daily basis.

We recently conducted a survey of 1273 hospitality professionals which showed that 8 out of 10 (84%) of respondents had experienced mental health issues within their career and 46% would not feel comfortable talking about their health concerns with their colleagues.

Hospitality staff should be able to discuss the state of their mental health and gain support from their peers and employers. It's important that although mental health can't be seen it is regularly discussed and policies reviewed. This should be the new definition of 'badge of honour'.

Together we can burn away mental health stigma within hospitality once and for all.

4/5 Hospitality Professionals

The NHS report that 1 in 4 of us will experience a period of ill mental health in our lifetime, yet we have found that to be much higher within hospitality almost 4 out of 5.

The Burnt Chef Project was set up to significantly reduce this epidemic and challenge attitudes towards mental health through open conversation, education and sales of custom branded merchandise.

As a non-profit, social enterprise, profits go directly back into funding a variety of stigma breaking services such as our free Academy training app, resources, podcast or free text support service.

Burnout

Burnout isn’t something which goes away on its own.

Rather, it can worsen unless you address the underlying issues causing it.

The stress and demands of the bustling workplace setting can prove too much for hospitality professionals when they don’t have enough support and time off.

Common signs of burnout:

  • Feeling tired or drained most of the time
  • Feeling helpless, trapped and/or defeated
  • Feeling detached/alone in the world
  • Having a cynical/negative outlook
  • Self-doubt
  • Procrastinating and taking longer to get things done
  • Feeling overwhelmed

Here are some ways that you can help reduce burnout within your team:

  • Offer targeted employee training
  • Offer two successive days off
  • Company policies around mental health, including access to support and counselling
  • Show them that you appreciate them
  • Check-in with them frequently

We do recover.
